Surging with a pushily melodic chorus and a breezy Californian feel, the song has little to do with anything the Mac had done before this, and it is a positively brilliant slice of pop songwriting, simultaneously urgent and timeless. It could have all been too mellow if it werenвЂ™t for the nervy, restless spirit of Buckingham, whose insistent opener, вЂњMonday Morning,вЂќ sets the tone for the rest of the album, as well the next few years of the groupвЂ™s career.

As soon as the Californian duo came onboard, Fleetwood Mac turned into a West Coast pop/rock band, transforming the very identity of the band and pushing the bandвЂ™s other songwriter, keyboardist Christine McVie, to a kindred soft rock sound.

In fact, in retrospect, itвЂ™s rather stunning how thoroughly Buckingham and Nicks, who had previously recorded as a duo and were romantically entangled in the past, overtook the British blues band. Still, thereвЂ™s no denying that 1975вЂ™s Fleetwood Mac represents not just the rebirth of the band, but in effect a second debut for the group - the introduction of a band that would dominate the sound of American and British mainstream pop for the next seven years. When they were led by Bob Welch they often flirted with pop, even recording the first version of the unabashedly smooth and sappy вЂњSentimental Lady,вЂќ which would later be one of the defining soft rock hits of the late вЂ™70s. ItвЂ™s unfair to say that Fleetwood Mac had no pop pretensions prior to the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the lineup in 1975.

Meanwhile, cuts like 'The City,' 'Chocolate,' and 'Sex' drive and climb like the best anthemic '80s stadium rock, roiling a host of influences into a single distinct sound that, the moment it hits your ears, becomes timeless. Much has been made of the 1975's avowed love of '80s John Hughes movies, and many of the cuts here, like the thrilling, lovesick 'Settle Down' and the sparkling 'Girls,' play with such great narrative momentum that they sound like songs culled from a Hughes soundtrack. In that sense, the band also recalls the way Fall Out Boy combined the rhythmic phrasing and melodies of contemporary R&B with their own brand of driving, guitar-based emo-rock. There is also a sophistication to the band's songs, and an instinct to blur genre lines that makes it hard to box them into one, easy to define sound. It helps that lead singer/songwriter Matthew Healy has a compelling tenor croon that can soar like Bono one minute and coo like Lionel Richie the next. While many of the tracks here bring to mind such icons as Peter Gabriel, INXS, and U2, they also fit nicely next to artists of the same moment, like Passion Pit, Temper Trap, and M83.

When rock guitars meet dancefloor synths, '80s influences become hard to deny, but while the 1975 definitely have a retro vibe (hence the name), the alchemy of how they bring those influences to bear is totally contemporary. The 2013 self-titled debut album from the 1975 is a superb album that finds the Manchester outfit poised on the brink of stardom.
